Childhood Practice The Standard for Childhood Practice (2007) has been developed as a response to the National Review of the Early Years and Childcare Workforce (2006), when key actions were identified and specified by Ministers as intentions for the future. One priority was the development of leadership in the Early Years and Childcare sector to create a workforce that is led by professionals qualified at Level 9 in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework. The Scottish Credit Qualifications and Framework can help you compare the wide range of Scottish qualifications. It recognises achievements from school, college and university, and many work-based qualifications, by giving each qualification a level and credit points. Qualifications at level 1 are the easiest, and qualifications at level 12 are the most demanding. SCQF credit points show how much learning is needed to achieve qualifications. The SCQF makes qualifications easier to describe and understand. Before the SCQF, there was no easy way to compare different types of qualification. Now it is easy to understand that, for example, an Advanced Higher is at the same level as a Higher National Certificate (HNC), the first year of a degree or a Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) level 3. They are all at SCQF level 7 because although they are all different types of qualification, the level of learning is roughly the same. The same credit rating applies to a range of qualifications rated at SCQF level 8, for example, a Higher National Diploma is at the same level as a Diploma of Higher Education or a Scottish Vocational Qualification (N/SVQ) level 4. It was agreed that 360 SCQF credit programmes that meet the Standard for Childhood Practice, would be developed at Levels 7, 8 and 9. Such qualifications would meet the requirements of the workforce who are required to register as Managers/Lead Practitioners by November 2011. The definition of the standard for those qualifications would therefore provide a benchmark for the development of an integrated programme. The Children's House has been delivering a wide range of childcare qualifications since, 1992. To support learners we have in place a framework to identify the credits
If you need more information on credit values for specific qualifications, contact The Children's House.
Programmes at Levels 7 and 8 will include Higher National Qualifications, Scottish Vocational Qualifications and Professional Development Awards.
